A remarkable man who left his mark, for good, on our town. My only direct encounter was a team tennis match maybe 12 years ago when Roger and partner beat me and my partner, leaving me to wonder, "How did he do that?" His love for life and fun showed through. Much peace to all your family!

We have respected and loved Roger Marchese for more than 50 years. He has benefitted our family and our community in many ways. We were blessed to have him in our lives all these years. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Whether as friend, professional, tennis player, golfer, magician, host, father and husband, he was always smiling, kind, generous and fun. He and Ruth set the standard as husband and wife, educators and role models for living well and serving their community with their hearts and energies. Roger and Ruth, we will always love and admire you.

We will always remember Roger as a great neighbor and a full of life guy. They made our neighborhood jump with activity. We still have the picture of us in our roaring 20s costumes which we wore to their "Max is Back" party. Our hearts go out to Ruth and children & grandchildren. Where ever he resides now, the fun has just begun.

Dear Ruth You have my deepest sympathy upon Rogers passing. I can remember years ago when my husband Dave had played a tennis game against Roger. He came home in amazement upon being beaten soundly and couldn't praise him enough for his great play. He had so many interests and was so good to so many people. His is really a loss for everyone. Roger and Ruth were super friends and immediate
neighbors of ours for over 20 years.
We were a young couple, about 24 back then and new to Oakland where we
bought our first house. They being older and already settled, took us in
and taught us so much about home ownership... and fun living!
They were our mentors in so many ways.
Rog had a huge work shop full of power tools which I knew little about
and he was very generous in teaching me how to use them.
They also taught us how to play badminton and tennis on their backyard
lighted tennis court and also introduced us to skiing, shooting ,
hockey, ping pong, pool, fast pitch softball and so much other fun stuff.
He was also a good amateur magician and an extremely funny practical joker.
Their house was our playpen during our early marriage years and we have
never laughed harder anywhere else then we did with them and their other
fun loving friends.
We eventually had to move to Texas, Florida and now PA and have always
missed the fun of them, though we stayed in touch as best we could.
So sad to lose this good friend. He will be missed by so many.

Goodbye to a great guy. Never heard him say an unkind work about anyone. Always promoting the Melone, Marchese and Cucci clans. The keeper of our records. He will be remembered.

Sincere condolences to Ruthie, Kim, Susan and the grand kids. Even though we were second cousins we always visited the Marchese's as kids and continued to keep in touch as adults. Roger was always a happy guy, cracking jokes and doing crazy card tricks! He was sharp as a tack even in his 90's, a product of good family genes. But most of all a good person. Always doing something with Community, Tennis, and teaching, but most of all his love of life and family is what drove him. He will be missed and always remembered with a smile. He is now is good company with his crazy brothers James and Eugene, cousins John (my dad), Uncle Al, Uncle Joe, Nana Blanche, and Aunt Rose. Luckily Rose and Blanche will be there to prevent the boys from being kicked out of heaven! RIP, "Cuz" Much Love, to the entire family....
Cousin Blanche and her "boyfriend" Pat (what Roger always called my husband).

I got to know Roger Marchese at GW elementary school in Mahwah. Although none of my kids were ever lucky enough to have him as a teacher, we always wished one of them would get him. He was a very popular teacher and when I found out he played tennis, we became friends. He invited me to bring a friend over to play at his home one time. I will always remember how good he played.

What an amazing man Roger was. I have so many great memories of him and family on many Christmases and summers visiting. Roger always amazed and entertained me with his energy and love of magic from my early childhood all the way to my own children. He will be greatly missed. My love and condolences go out to all his family and loved ones.

Roger was not only a magician with cards but he was also a magician with the tennis racquet, Roger could compete with any player. He was instrumental in organizing Oakland team tennis in the 70's which introduced hundreds of players of all levels to compete and socialize at the same time. Team tennis in Oakland is still alive and well thanks to Roger. He will be missed by all.
