Harvie B. Klaus, 98, of Oakland, died on Sunday, February 26 2017. Born on a small farm in Grafton, NY, he studied at SUNY Albany, receiving bachelor and master degrees in the sciences and math. Enlisting in the Air Corps in 1941, he was sent as a cadet to MIT to study meteorology, which became a lifelong passion. He subsequently served with the 9th Air Force in Britain, France, Luxemburg, and Germany. Honorably discharged at the end of WWII as a lieutenant, he remained in the Army National Guard for 3 years. In 1942 as a cadet he married Johanna (nee Reinecke) of Jersey City who predeceased him in 2010 after 67 years together. From 1946 to 1980 they resided in Wynantskill, NY. Harvie worked in scientific research for several companies, including Behr Manning and W & L E Gurley, a division of Teledyne. He designed and produced optical equipment for Zerox as well as telescope optics. Retiring in 1980 they moved to Oakland to be near family. Harvie is survived by his loving family, daughter Joan and husband Arnold Ludke, grandchildren Peter, Andrew and wife Meredith, and Amy, as well as several nieces. Harvie has been an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Oakland Senior Citizens Club, the American Chemical Society and the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science.
