Obituary of Georgina Whyte Simmers

Georgina W. Simmers (nee Sellars) age 87 of Oakland, NJ. passed away quietly at home on January 31, 2024.

Georgie was born on September 10, 1936 to George and Elizabeth Sellars in Glasgow, Scotland and ventured to the US shortly after birth.  Georgie excelled in school and always reminded her sons that she received an A+ in penmanship but apparently, they did not pick up that trait.  After marrying the love of her life, David, they started a family in Ramblewood, NJ and moved to Oakland, NJ in 1973.  Georgie was a lover of animals, sewing, trivia, puzzles and mystery novels but nothing more than her family and friends.  Over the years, Georgie held various jobs and volunteered heavily at the Oakland schools and Ponds Reformed Church.  Her passion for sewing can still be seen in the Christmas pageant costumes at Ponds.  Across many decades, during football season, you may have heard Georgie from a far, yelling at the TV for the Giant’s quarterback to “throw the ball” or the running back to “hold on to that ball” or the defense to “get him!”.  It was during those times that the feistiness came out in the 5’2” Scot – very funny to see.

Georgie was predeceased by her devoted husband of over 50 years, David F. Simmers, and her devoted sister Betty and her husband Joe Oxley of Glendora, NJ.  Georgie is survived by her two sons Jeffrey and his wife Eileen and their children Lauren and Michelle of West Milford, NJ and Matthew and his wife Debra and their children Matthew, Thomas and Andrew of Highland Lakes, NJ, and her dear niece, Eileen H. Lydon of Franklinville, NJ.

Georgie was an incredibly kind, caring, funny, talented and artistic lady who positively impacted so many people.  She will be sorely missed.
