Edward Vanderbeck (84) of Oakland, devoted husband of the late Johanna Vanderbeck passed away on September 9, 2012. Ed was born in Paterson, New Jersey to James and Elsie Vanderbeck on December 6, 1927. He married his childhood sweetheart, Johanna (“Honey”) Pilaar on October 16, 1954. After graduating from Newark College of Engineering, he built a career with Public Service Electric & Gas that spanned four decades. He offered a significant amount of his time and many of his analytical and organizational talents to the Borough of Oakland as an Independent councilman, school board member, and member of the Oakland Historical Society. Ed is survived by his children Susan (Mark) Steinhardt, Janet (Mike Yar) Vanderbeck, Ed (Nancy) Vanderbeck and Patricia (Marc) DiGiorgio; granddaughters Theresa, Jennifer, Kristen, Briana, and Danielle; siblings Robert (Nellie) Vanderbeck, Elsie (John) DeBlock, James (Joan) Vanderbeck; brothers-in-law Neil (Pat) Pilaar and Hans Pilaar and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM Thursday, September 13 at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road. Funeral services will be held 10 AM on Friday, September 14, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 17 Pompton Avenue, Pompton Lakes. Burial will follow at Maryrest Cemetery 25 Seminary Road, Mahwah, NJ. Arrangements are by Oakland Memorial Home.
