Obituary of James F Fitzmaurice Jr.

James Francis Fitzmaurice, Jr. (Fitz) of Greenwood Lake, NY passed away peacefully on January 14, 2021. Fitz was born on March 13, 1937 to James F. Fitzmaurice and Katherine E. (Mahoney). He grew up in The Bronx, New York and moved to Oakland and then Wyckoff to raise his family, before moving to Greenwood Lake many years ago. He was a retired business owner (House of Marble and Tile, Inc.) and contractor in the marble and stone business. Fitz had a love and special talent for teaching young people, which he used to train a new generation of contractors in his trade. He served as a Scout and Venturing leader for many years as part of the Northern New Jersey Council, BSA. He also enjoyed serving as shooting sports instructor on summer camp staffs at both Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco and most recently at Camp Yaw Paw, where his love for the outdoors and teaching real life skills was felt by many campers, Scout parents and staff members. He was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, was honored with the Silver Beaver award, and completed Woodbadge training as a member of the Bear Patrol. Fitz enjoyed the roses in his garden, camping, hunting, and many weekends in Vermont. Fitz was a kind and gentle man who was devoted to his family and many dear friends. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his brother Robert and his wife Diana, children Kathleen Long, Patricia Fitzmaurice Harty and her husband Thomas, and Joseph Fitzmaurice and his wife Andrea, grandchildren Victoria, Thomas, Alexandra, and Colin Harty; Zachary and Katherine Fitzmaurice; Andrew Long; and Joseph and Danalyn Fitzmaurice. He was predeceased by his beloved son James in 2020 and daughter-in-law Betsy Fitzmaurice (Schaefer) in 2011. Fitz’s surviving family members include Jimmy’s partner, Sue Sandberg, and her children Katie, Megan and Jack. He also leaves nieces, nephews, cousins and his loyal service and companion dog, Izzy. In lieu of flowers we have set up a “Go Fund Me” account. To honor his life and dedication to Scouting for almost 35 years, we’d like to donate and complete a project at one of the camps.
