I was a supervisor with Tom at Ramapo and Indian Hills. We shared experiences in Paterson and our faith in Jesus Christ, Tom loved teaching, students, and made a difference in many lives. Our offices were within a few feet of each other and Tom was always there to listen, chat, and share stories about his wife, children, and grandchildren. Accept my deepest sympathy and prayers for your comfort. You were blessed with a loving and spirited husband, father, and grandfather.

Steve, my deepest sympathy to you and your family after the passing of your Father. Please extend my sincerest condolences to your family. While I never knew your Father, after reading some of the tributes, I believe you can take comfort in knowing that he clearly made a difference in so many lives as an educator, friend, or Father and that your family is in the thoughts and prayers of so many who knew him. Mr. McKenzie changed my life forever. Knowing my abilities in French, he let ME teach French 1 & 2 classes because the subs didn't know any French. After I taught myself German 2, he let me do something never done before: told me if I passed the final exam for German 2, I could proceed directly to German 3. So he let me skip a year. Then he arranged for a private German tutor to come once a week from the New School in NYC. I studied French, German and Latin and won the Foreign Language award. THANK YOU MR. MCKENZIE. Your work is done: you will never be forgotten.

In the mid 1960’s at Indian Hills High School I had Thomas McKenzie as a Latin teacher. Although Latin was a difficult subject for me, Thomas McKenzie made it so much fun that I actually looked forward to his class. He exhibited a great enthusiasm for his craft as a teacher and as I saw it, an entertainer. I can still picture him standing on his desk delivering oratory from Cicero and Caesar. Although the Latin still comes in handy at times, what I remember most is the man. It was Thomas McKenzie and other fine teachers in the Oakland school district that inspired me to make teaching my career.
