Obituary of Mildred Schumacher
Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mildred A. Schumacher (nee Maltz) formerly of Demarest, NJ, passed away on July 21, 2019, at the age of 91. Mildred was born in Teaneck, NJ and lived her entire life in NJ. She and her husband of 51 years, Charlie, who passed away June 15, 2006, raised their five children in Emerson and Demarest.
From an early age, Mildred loved learning and music, especially the piano, which she played from age 7 and then throughout her life, including developing concerts and sing-alongs at the Demarest Senior Center. She was valedictorian in elementary school in North Bergen, Academy of the Holy Angels High School and Good Counsel College, now part of Pace University in White Plains. She loved math and the sciences, majoring in chemistry, and minoring in math. Mildred loved languages too, taking many courses in Latin and German, which she felt helped her with the sciences. Most of all, her competitive spirit and love of learning came through in family Scrabble games. Her favorite dessert was ice cream.
Mildred’s career as a chemist started with International Nickel Corporation in New York and it was while commuting that she met Charlie on the bus. After she focused on raising her children, she worked at Noyes Data Corporation and Medical Economics, finishing her career editing the Physicians’ Desk Reference book, as well as other technical publications.
She was an active member of St. Joseph Church and the senior center. Mildred enjoyed swimming laps at Demarest and Westwood Swim Clubs and The Y. Mildred loved trying new restaurants and traveling, with some of their favorite trips to the Canadian Rockies, the Alps, Ireland and Italy. She was always proud of her children and nine grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Mildred is survived by her five children, Carol (Bob Kelly) of Arkansas, June of Colorado, Audrey Traynor (Kevin) of New Jersey, James (Diane) of New Jersey, and William (Noel) of New Jersey, nine grandchildren (Elizabeth, Jacquelyn, James, Garrett, Thomas, Christopher, Timothy, Michael, and Collin), her sister Marie Goodman, and numerous cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Schumacher, her parents, Henry B. and Isabel W. Maltz, and her sister, Marilyn Maltz.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, July 26, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Oakland Memorial Home. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 9:30 at St. Mary’s Church, 17 Pompton Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ.
