Westphal, Fred D. 79 of Oakland, NJ passed away December 7 in Wayne, NJ after a prolonged illness. Fred was born Feb 23, 1936 to Fred A. and Helen Westphal in Jersey City, and was raised on Birchwood Drive in East Paterson. In 1957, Fred married the girl across the street, Nancy Pityo, and they settled in Oakland. From 1954 to 1974, Fred proudly served in the Army National Guard and was promoted to First Sergeant when he transferred to the Army Reserves serving from 1974 to 1977 and officially retired in 1996 with an Honorable Discharge. Fred worked at PSE&G for 40 years, starting as meter reader in 1954 and retiring as a Customer Support Center Supervisor. He was a dedicated family man who shared a love of the outdoors, sports, fishing, and travel with his family and took them on many vacations that they will remember forever. Fred was a talented handyman and mechanic who bailed his family out more times than we can count. In retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and being a part of their lives. Fred will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Nancy, and his devoted children: Robert Westphal of Oldsmar, FL; Kathleen Errico of Mahwah, NJ; and Patricia Mazzilli and her husband Peter of Oakland, NJ; his brother: Thomas; and his beloved grandchildren: Jennifer Errico and Fredrick, Anthony and Alexandra Mazzilli. The family will be forever grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at Arden Courts and Grace and Valley Hospice making his last years comfortable and safe. Friends and family may visit at Oakland Memorial Home 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland, NJ on December 9 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service at Oakland Memorial Home and Interment with Full Military Honors will be at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, NJ December 10 at 10:30 am.
